Happy Easter

We took Nora to church for the first time today, and she did incredibly well. She slept most of the time except for when she woke up to be fed at one point.

Then, we went to Dede and Grandpa's for lunch, and she was a perfect angel as everyone played "pass the baby". She only fussed a few times. Once to be fed, and twice when she needed her diaper changed. I was so proud of her!

However, our day didn't get off to a great start. I had to wake her from a deep sleep to get her dressed for church, and she wasn't all too impressed, as you can see from her reaction here:

And for a little added cuteness, here is a picture I from her newborn photoshoot. Cutest little Easter Bunny I have ever seen!

10 wonderful days

It's been 10 days since Nora was born, so I thought I would share 10 things about her that we've learned in the past week and a half.

1. She has the cutest dimples in her chubby cheeks and in her chin.

2. She has some of my and my family's physical traits, but overall, she looks like her Daddy's side of the family.

3. She is an "instant gratification" girl. When she is hungry, she goes from zero to freaking out in about 5 seconds. She opens her mouth like she wants to latch on and pecks at or sucks on whatever gets in her way. This has earned her the nicknames "Angry Bird" and "Hungry Chicken", or more affectionately just Birdie or Chicken.

4. She is stubborn as a mule. Not only does she want when she wants when she wants it, but if she DOESN'T want to eat, you can not pry her mouth open. She will stare you down and put an indignant pout on her face. Some people say she comes by this trait naturally. I'm not sure what they mean. ;)

5. She hates having her diaper changed and getting sponge bath, but once those things are over, she gives the best snuggles.

6. Her favorite lullabyes are "You are my Sunshine" and a song my Dad wrote called "From a Rockingchair". The latter is the only song I sang to her before she was born, so I like to think she recognizes it.

7. She really likes music in general. She likes it when someone sings to her, and she likes listening to music that is playing around her. You can see her little eyes start to look around as she tunes in to whatever music is being played or sung.

8. She is neither bothered by nor interested in the dogs, but they are very interested in her. They like to "check" on her when she is napping by peeking into her crib or playpen, and they like to sniff at her when she is being fed. I'm sure this relationship will change down the road as she grows.

9. She likes being swaddled, and is very content when she's all wrapped up like a "baby burrito".

10. She loves us so much (maybe almost as much as we love her) that it makes our hearts burst. There is nothing like the snuggles and sweet faces a newborn baby makes at you when they are totally content in your arms. I wish she would always love us as much as she does now.

Here are a few pictures of our sweet girl, taken on her "1 week birthday":

Introducing Elinor Catherine Lyle (A Birth Story)

This birth experience, while not what I had originally hoped for, was one of the best, most empowering experiences of my life. I attribute this to Hypnobirthing methods, my labor support team, as well as the medical staff at my hospital, all of whom supported and encouraged me 100% through the ups and downs of my 18 hours of labor.

On Friday, April 1st, I had my 39 week appointment with my OB. At that time, I had an internal exam, and I was discouraged to discover that my Bishop Scale score was a zero. My cervix was posterior, high, hard, closed, and baby girl was at a -4 station. My OB wanted to schedule me for either an induction or a C-section on April 14th, which would be just shy of 41 weeks. I hesitantly agreed to be “penciled in” for that date, but I left the appointment feeling uneasy about the decision. I fretted over it all weekend, but after talking with several friends, I decided that I needed to try to relax about it, and I wrote down some questions for my OB that I planned to ask at my next appointment on April 8th.

On Sunday, April 3rd, I had a thick egg white mucous discharge all day long. While I was encouraged by this, I also knew it didn’t necessarily mean anything.
On Monday, April 4th, I woke up and went to the bathroom at 8 a.m. I still had a lot of discharge, and when I stood up, there was a significant trickle down my leg. Like many other women, I thought maybe I’d just lost control of my bladder, but I was also hopeful that my membranes were rupturing. I told my husband what I thought might be happening, and he jumped out of bed, wondering what we should do. I told him to start getting together some of the things that we hadn’t yet packed but to not get too excited yet.

I called a doula friend to ask her opinion, and she suggested calling my OB’s office to go in and be checked. I took her advice and made an appointment to go in and get checked within the hour. I called my Mom and told her what was going on. When I stood up to start getting ready, it became clear that I had not lost control of my bladder but that my membranes had most definitely ruptured. I was excited but nervous as I was having no other signs of labor. I considered staying home for a while, but my water kept gushing and gushing, and I became anxious about it. I called my OB’s off ice and told them that I didn’t think there was any need to be checked, and that I would instead be going straight to L&D.

I took a shower and finished packing some last minute items, called my Mom and Mother-in-Law to tell them what was happening, and we left for the hospital.
At 9:45 a.m., I was checked into my room. I was dilated only 1 cm, 50% effaced, and baby girl was still at a -4 station. I was hooked up to a monitor, and we discovered that I was having contractions, but they were very weak. I was not in “active labor”.

At 11:00, I saw my OB. At that time, I was 1.5 cm dilated, 70% effaced, but there was no change in baby’s position. I was barely feeling surges and didn’t even need to breathe through them since they were so weak. My doctor wanted to start Pitocin right away, but I got permission to try some other things first. I spent the next hour and a half on the birth ball and walking the halls trying to get labor to pick up on its own.

At 12:30 P.M., the surges were still mild. I had to breathe through them a bit, but they were barely registering on the monitor. There was no change in dilation, effacement, or station. I bought myself 30 more minutes, but at 1:00 P.M., I agreed to start on a low dose of Pitocin.

Over the next 2-3 hours, the surges started to get stronger and closer together. I was using Hypnobirthing breathing and relaxation techniques to get through them. My nurse, doctor, and labor buddy (my sister-in-law) all commented on how well I was breathing and shared some very encouraging words with me. They all believed I could continue on without an epidural and they shared over and over how impressed they were with how focused and relaxed I seemed to be.

At 4:30 P.M., I had my first internal since 11 A.M. At this time, I was dilated 4 cm, I was 80% effaced, and baby girl had moved down to a -2 station. This is still very high, and for the first time, my OB mentioned the possibility of a C-section . He said he knew it wasn’t what I wanted and that he still believed that baby could move down, but he wanted me to have time to get used to the possibility. I continued to use Hypnobirthing relaxation techniques to keep me calm and focused. I kept repeating a line from my affirmations, “I set all fear aside as I prepare for the birth of my baby.”

Over the next 2 hours, the surges became so strong and close together, that I began having some difficulty breathing through them because as soon as one would end another would begin. I asked to sit on the toilet for a while, as I was sure I needed to have a bowel movement. I sat there for about 30 minutes trying to breathe through the surges.

By 6:30 P.M., I was 6 cm. dilated and 90% effaced, but baby had moved back up to a -3station. At this point, I decided I was going to ask for an epidural. I knew with 4 cm to go and baby so high up that labor could go on for many more hours, and while I was willing to labor as long as possible in order to have a vaginal delivery, my breathing was becoming ineffective. I was rocking and crying. While they were trying to hide it, I could tell my husband, sister-in-law, and nurse were becoming a bit stressed out as they watched me writhe in pain. At no time did any of them suggest I seek out pain relief. The decision was 100% my own and I was at peace with the decision.

At 7:00 P.M., I received the epidural and within 20-30 minutes, I was completely relaxed (and so was my support team haha!)

At 9:00 P.M., I was checked again. I was dilated 8-9 cm, my cervix was pretty much 100% effaced, but baby girl was still hanging out between a -2 and -3 station. Again, my OB mentioned the possibility of a C-section. In my mind, I had continued to repeat some of my favorite Hypnobirthing affirmations, and I reacted so calmly to the possibility that he kept asking my husband, “Does she understand what I am telling her?” My husband assured him that I was fully aware of what was going on.
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law called and asked if they could visit for a while, and since I’d had the epi, I said they could. They stayed until about 11:00 P.M.

At 11:30 P.M., I was completely dilated and effaced, but baby was still not budging. My OB told me that he really wanted me to be able to deliver vaginally, and he told me to push for the next hour or so and then the nurse would call him with my progress. Over the next hour and a half, I breathed and pushed to no avail. Baby girl was not moving down much.

At 1 A.M., my OB stopped by and told me that she seemed to move down “a little bit”, so he was going to give me another hour before we would make any final decisions.

At 2 A.M., not only had she not moved down, but she moved back up some. We discussed the C-section, and I decided to consent. Just as when I consented to the epidural, I was completely at peace with the decision. I continued to use Hypnobirthing breathing and relaxation techniques to keep me calm and focused. I truly HAD set all fear aside, and I was completely prepared for the birth of my baby.

At 2:43 A.M. on April 5th, 2011, Elinor Catherine was born via C-section. She was 9 lbs, 2 oz, and 21 inches of absolute perfection. She has dark hair, her Daddy’s eyes, her Mommy’s nose, and the cutest dimples in her chubby cheeks and chin that I have ever seen.

Maternity Pics

A couple of months ago, we had maternity pictures taken by a good friend of mine. I posted one here a while back, but I finally got the full CD from her. Here are some of my favorites.

19 days to... whaa?? (And nursery pics)

Apparently, I am carrying a watermelon. ::Gives ticker the side-eye:: I had a growth ultrasound last week, and baby girl is estimated to be 8 lbs 4 oz. This is not shocking. I weighed over 9 lbs at birth. Surprisingly to some, perhaps, I am not nervous about birthing a "big" baby. I am more nervous about unnecessary interventions that may be pushed on me because of her estimated size. Already, one of the OBs in my group has mentioned induction and c-section due to her size. I'm putting him off for now. I don't intend to do either of those things based on her size alone.

I did have a small blood pressure "scare" last week. My BP was slightly elevated. This same intervention-happy OB proceeded to tell me all of the worst-case scenarios that could happen due to high blood pressure. Then he proceeded to take my BP again, and not surprisingly, it was through the roof. He sent me to L&D for 3 hours of monitoring, and for the full 3 hours my blood pressure was perfectly normal. Thank goodness for that!

I'm now going to the doctor twice weekly for BP monitoring. My due date is very FAST approaching. Brad and I are a combination of very excited and completely terrified. The bottom line is that we can not wait to meet our precious daughter, but we are very nervous first-time parents.

On a fun note, the nursery is done!

Survey Says! (And some "puffy" pictures)

How far along? 34w4d
Weight gain/loss: I think I'm done discussing this lol.
Maternity clothes? Yes, and I had to buy a few new clothing items recently.
Stretch marks? Sadly, yes. I'm not one of the lucky ones. So far, they're all under my belly button.
Sleep? Yes, but not well. Swelling has spread to my hands, and I wake up with them aching. I'm having to wear carpal tunnel type wrist bands now while I sleep. See pictures below. It's sexy.
Best moment this week? Baby shower! Also, kitchen and bathroom are now 100% completely renovated. YAY!
Food cravings: I'd like to say those Cadbury mini eggs and diet coke, but that's more of a "want" than an actual craving. :)
Gender: It's a girl!
Belly button in or out? Still in but there's a weird little lip poking out.
Movement? Yep, she's a move and a shaker.
What I miss? Comfortable and restful sleep.
What I'm looking forward to: My 2nd baby shower at work on March 9th. Also, maternity leave can not come soon enough.
Milestones: Does having a baby shower count as a milestone? If so, I guess that's my milestone this week. Oh, and we went on the L&D tour recently and finished our Hypnobirthing classes.

And now, behold the sexiness:

Baby Shower

My sister-in-law, Elisabeth, and my mother-in-law, Patsy, hosted my shower this afternoon.

It was a beautiful day, and I had fun seeing some family and friends I haven't seen in quite some time!

I was thankful that there were no "cheesy" games, but we did play one cute 'educational' quiz game where we had to try to figure out what different baby animals were called, for example a baby kangaroo is a joey etc.. I got 7 out of about 20 correct. Apparently, I do NOT know my baby animals. (Does this mean that I am NOT smarter than a 5th grader? Hmmmm...)

There was a basket set up with "advice for the Mom-to-be" cards where family and friends wrote some really sweet advice such as, "Enjoy every stage. Each one is better than the one before it. Don't fret over what the experts think. You will adapt and know what you need to do!"

We also had a frame set up with Nora's 3D u/s in it with a "signature" matte where people could write messages to us and/or baby.

So far as gifts are concerned, we got our high chair, jumperoo, monitors, bathtub, baby's 1st year record book, 2 handmade blankets, several other blankets, outfits, hooded towels, wash cloths, crib pads/covers, Sophie the teether (score!), "cloth diapers" (the Gerber ones, so burp cloths), and some other small accessories like pacifiers, bath stuff etc..

We didn't get too many pictures, but here are a couple of me.

Brad and I are so thankful for our very generous family and friends!

A Mother's Conversation With Her Unborn Child and Daddy's Promise

These come from the Hypnobirthing Institute, but I don't think we could have said any of it better ourselves.

From Mommy:

"Dear Little Baby, I want you to know that my life combines with yours in love.I'm carrying you with such loving pride. I look forward to your birth with such joy. I'm elated at the thought of your coming to me."

From Daddy:

"I promise to love you unconditionally. I promise to protect you, for your pain hurts me more than my own. I promise to be a pillar of courage and a pillow of comfort. I promise to explore the world with you, explain the world to you, and expect the world of you. I promise to be a fortress in which youc an hide, a friend in whom you can confide, and a father in whose heart you'll find love and in whose eyes you'll find pride."

It's been so hard to put into our own words what it is we want to say to our sweet baby girl. As we sit here watching sweet Nora wiggle around, moving my big, round belly back and forth, these excerpts express only a very small part of what we are feeling.

Survey: 31 weeks 2 days

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Yes, my head is cut off. On purpose. I'm looking a little rough right now. :)

How far along? 31w2d
Weight gain/loss: Yep, still gaining lol.
Maternity clothes? Yes, except for a few shirts. I'm starting to think I'm going to need some new shirts, but I'm trying to hold out.
Stretch marks? Unfortunately, I had some show up about 2 weeks ago. They're pink and thin and below my belly button. ::Sad face::
Sleep? Decidedly more difficult these days. It is almost impossible to get comfortable. I wake up often with sore or tingly limbs.
Best moment this week? Shower invitations going out and noticing a few things bought from my registry. Getting the kitchen renovation underway. It should be done this week!
Food cravings: Nothing specific. I'm just hungry all the time.
Gender: It's a girl!
Belly button in or out? Still in.
Movement? Lots and often. She's a wiggle worm. A gymnast in the making.
What I miss? Comfortable sleep.
What I'm looking forward to: Getting my kitchen back and the rest of my house back in order.
Milestones: Passing my glucose tolerance test a couple of weeks ago. :)

Haiku Thursday

I participated in "Haiku Thursday" on my friend Sulfa's blog, and now I am going to share my masterpiece of a haiku with you.

Ahem. ::Clears throat::

No snow day today
At school with antsy students
Who don't want to work

Check out more examples of haiku at Sulfa's blog, "Close My Eyes and Leap".

Pictures

I feel like I am constantly taking and posting pictures, but I've had a few people ask to see new pictures, so here we go. I'm stealing this idea from my friend Jolene. I hope she doesn't mind!

Traditional side view (Which I felt ok about until I compared it to my 4 week picture.. and I still have 12ish weeks to go. I am gigantic. UGH!):

Survey time!

How far along? 27 weeks 2 days

Maternity clothes? Yep. I think I have 2 or 3 shirts and a few tank tops that aren't maternity, but everything else is and has been for a long while now.
Stretch marks? Still nothing new. Fingers crossed!
Sleep? I would say I wake more often to shift positions as limbs fall asleep and get tingly, but I'm still pretty happy with how I am sleeping. I may need an extra pillow to help with comfort soon, though.
Best moment this week? Hitting 3rd trimester and finding out when my shower is going to be.
Food cravings: Not too much, but when I do have a craving, it's still for something sweet.
Gender: It's a girl!
Belly button in or out? Still in. Maybe a little less shallow, though.
Movement? Yes, especially at night when I get in bed, in the middle of the night when I wake up, first thing in the morning, when I'm in the bath tub, and after I eat something sweet.
